The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) was established in 1985 by an Act of Parliament. It is one of India’s largest and most trusted universities for distance and online education. Step 1: Visit the Official Admission Portal: To begin, visit IGNOU’s online admission portal at https://iop.ignouonline.ac.in.
Step 2: Create Your DEB ID: Before filling out the application form, it is mandatory to create a DEB ID. This ID is required to complete your registration. You can follow the instructions provided by IGNOU here to create your DEB ID.
Step 3: Register as a New User: Click on the “New Registration” button and enter the necessary details, including your full name, mobile number, and email ID. Once registered, your login credentials will be sent to your email and mobile number.
Step 4: Fill the Online Application Form: Log in with your username and password. Fill in your personal details, educational qualifications, and programme preferences carefully. Double-check all information before moving to the next step.
Step 5: Upload the Required Documents: You’ll need to upload scanned copies of the following documents:
Make sure the scanned files are as per size limits (photograph and signature under 100 KB; other documents under 200 KB).
Step 6: Pay the Admission Fee: You can pay the programme fee securely online using a credit card, debit card, or net banking.
Step 7: Submit the Form and Save a Copy: After reviewing all the details, submit your application. It is advisable to download or print a copy of the submitted form for future reference.

IGNOU’s Learning Management System (LMS) is designed to give students a seamless and engaging online learning experience. Through the LMS, students can access video lectures, e-books, PDFs, discussion forums, live classes, recorded sessions, assignment portals, quizzes, and academic calendars—all in one place. Once enrolled, students receive login details that allow them to use the LMS anytime, from anywhere, using a laptop or even a mobile phone.

It also keeps track of your academic progress, so you always know how you’re doing in your studies. IGNOU conducts term-end examinations for its online programmes in a structured and flexible way. Depending on the course, exams may be held in pen-and-paper format at designated centres or through Computer-Based Tests (CBT). Some certificate and diploma courses may also have online proctored exams, allowing students to appear from the comfort of their homes. Apart from exams, students are also required to submit assignments, projects, and practical work, which form a key part of the evaluation process.
All examination-related processes—such as filling out the exam form, submitting assignments or projects—are done online through IGNOU’s official portals. Students are expected to carefully follow the university’s guidelines and instructions, which are shared well in advance through the website and LMS. Whether you’re in a city or a remote area, IGNOU ensures the examination process is smooth, transparent, and accessible for every learner.
IGNOU has its own Campus Placement Cell (CPC) to support students and alumni in finding suitable job opportunities. he CPC acts as a link between students and companies, helping them connect for placements that match the students’ qualifications and career goals. It organises job fairs, placement drives, and career-related events at IGNOU headquarters, regional centres, study centres, and even company offices.
To support students better, CPC also plans to offer soft skills training, which can help improve communication, confidence, and interview performance. A new Training and Placement Portal is also being developed. Once ready, this online platform will allow students and employers to register, post or apply for jobs, and take part in placement activities.
